Energy sector Overview

At VRC Metal Systems, our vision is “To be a global leader in cold spray and advanced manufacturing process technologies.”

Cold spray technology saves money for those in the energy sector.

The Energy Sector comprises three segments: electricity, oil, and natural gas. The electricity generated comes from coal, nuclear power plants, natural gas, hydroelectric plants, oil, and renewable sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal. Pipelines, rail, and other means move the raw materials and products in and out of these facilities.

Cold spray allows us to quickly, efficiently and cost effectively build and repair components that affect the many sub-sectors of the energy industry.

Challenges In The Energy Sector

Several main challenges face the Energy Sector — lowering carbon emissions, lowering risks, and lowering costs.

In addition to finding alternative energy technologies, reducing and recycling carbon emissions will require existing facilities to implement carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies and run at peak efficiencies. CO2 compression, transport, and disposition rely on large compression equipment and large-diameter steel pipe.

A significant supply chain risk involves the availability of steel to implement and replace compression, transport, and distribution equipment throughout the energy sector. The aging energy infrastructure of existing supply distribution also needs to be addressed to lower risk. For example, corrosion of pipelines can lead to leaks and spills of hazardous materials.

Maintaining existing infrastructure is paramount at this time.

How VRC and Cold Spray Can Help The Energy Sector

VRC Metal Systems’ High-Pressure Cold Spray (HPCS) is a supersonic particle deposition process that is able to create coatings and dimensional structures with enhanced corrosion resistance, wear resistance, or electromagnetic interference shielding. You can use it to repair corrosion and dimensional imperfections, preserving the existing components.

VRC’s cold spray technology can be some of the energy infrastructure solutions to lowering carbon emissions, risk, and cost in the energy sector with the following benefits:

  • Repairs can be completed in situ due to the portability of VRC Metal Systems’ cold spray equipment, increasing operational efficiency by reducing downtime.
  • Cold spray technology can rapidly apply nickel, titanium, and other metals to restore dimensional features that are no longer within tolerances, allowing the original part’s retention.
  • Cold spray applies high-strength, high-density coatings, machinable with conventional subtractive manufacturing methods.
  • If HPCS deposits become worn or damaged, they can again be repaired with cold spray, resulting in no limit to the number of repair cycles.
  • Applied composite blends act as corrosion inhibitors, preventing deterioration of the base material and providing excellent thermal and electrical conductivity.

VRC Dragonfly

The VRC Dragonfly is just one configuration of our HPCS equipment that will provide time-saving, cost-efficient repairs. It is a multi-component system, with the largest component weighing only 94lbs (42.63Kg). The modular design allows for easy transport to the repair site instead of wasting time with the logistics and downtime of moving the part to the repair equipment.

This portability feature is advantageous for maintaining and upgrading existing infrastructure in the energy sector without the cost of disassembling or replacing entire sections of transportation and distribution installations. Apply high strength, corrosion-resistant, or enhanced conductive coatings with a full array of metal or composite powders.

Dragonfly with Heater and PF

With VRC Metal Systems, repair technicians can often repair a part without removing and replacing it. The repair has minimal emissions or toxic fumes that impact the environment or the health of the workers. The fixed portion can, in some cases, even be better than a new component by using a superior material to repair a sensitive substrate and at a fraction of the cost.
